Asking the right question at the right time can make all the difference. This is definitely true when it comes to preparing for a boudoir shoot.

Before you book your shoot, it’s important to think through what you want and whether the photographer you’re considering can deliver it. These are the questions I recommend every prospective client ask during their boudoir consult.

What’s Your Boudoir Photography Style?

There’s a lot of variety in boudoir photography. It includes a whole range from sweet, bright, and natural to edgy, sultry, and glamorous. 

When you’re choosing a photographer, it’s important to know if their style aligns with yours. In addition to having the photographer to describe their style, you can also ask:

• Do you use natural or studio lighting?

• What sets do you have available?

• Can I see your portfolio or examples of finished products?

What Does Your Process Include?

An experienced boudoir photographer will easily walk you through exactly what will happen when you step into the studio.

Some important follow up questions are:

• What’s the typical timeline for a shoot?

• Are hair and makeup included?

• How do you handle posing for people with no experience?

• Do you do image reveals in person or virtually?

This way there will be no surprises on the day of your shoot, and you can relax and be yourself in front of the camera.

Can I Bring Someone With Me to My Shoot?

Boudoir shoots are very intimate, and every photographer has a different policy on whether clients can bring guests.

Having someone else in the studio can change the way you act, which may impact your photos. Before you discuss bringing someone to your shoot with your photographer, it’s important to consider why you want them there and if it will really be beneficial to you.

What Sort of Retouching Do You Do?

Retouching can drastically change your photos if it’s taken too far, so it’s important to clarify with your photographer what your expectations are.

What’s Your Privacy Policy?

At the end of the day, you should be the one in charge of your photos, and that requires a thorough understanding of your photographer’s privacy policy.

Make sure you clarify:

• Will you share my photos on social media?

• How will my photos be delivered?

• Do you use AI in any of your editing or other processes?

Unless you explicitly tell your photographer they can use your photos in their portfolio or for marketing purposes, they should never post your photos anywhere online. Secure file sharing software should be used for digital image sharing.
