What I Wish I Knew Before My Maternity Boudoir Shoot — Premier Missouri Boudoir

Deciding to do a boudoir shoot is exciting, but also scary. After all, most of us aren’t used to strangers taking photos of us in our underwear!

Knowing what to expect helps ease some of the anxiety, so I wanted to share a few things I wish I’d known before I did my boudoir boudoir shoot at Beauty in Boudoir.

You Can (And Should) Bring Accessories

When I was planning my outfits for my first boudoir shoot, I was focused on shopping for lingerie. Jewelry briefly crossed my mind, but beyond that, I didn’t think about accessories at all!

While wearing less is the point of a boudoir shoot, accessories mix things up and bring some personality to your photos. Luckily, the Beauty in Boudoir client closet had plenty for me to borrow to make my boudoir outfits more interesting.

If I were planning another boudoir shoot, I would definitely bring a few pairs of heels. The ones from the client closet were great, but it’s always more comfortable to wear your own. Just make sure the heels are higher rather than shorter (photographs better).

Lingerie Isn’t the Only Thing You Can Wear for a Boudoir Shoot

Lingerie is “traditional” attire for a boudoir shoot, but there are lots of other things you can wear that still celebrate your body. This idea didn’t cross my mind at all when I was preparing for my first boudoir shoot, but I wore lots of different types of pieces for my maternity boudoir shoot, including:

  • A crop top with unbuttoned jeans

  • A cardigan over lingerie

  • Sheer maternity dresses

All of these work for non-maternity shoots as well! Jean jackets, other sheer clothing, and swim suits are also popular options.

A Pedicure Is a Must, Not a “Nice to Have”

Leading up to my boudoir shoot, I went back and forth on whether to get a manicure and pedicure. I ended up skipping them because I don’t wear a lot of nail polish normally and I wanted to keep my nails natural.

I honestly think this is the biggest mistake I made going into my shoot! A pedicure is about a lot more than polish, and my heels could have used some love before they showed up in front of the camera.

It’s a small detail, but when you’re paying for photos you’ll look back on for years to come, you want everything to be perfect.

You Don’t Have to Wax if You Don’t Want to

I also spent a lot of time debating if I should get a wax or not. I ultimately decided not to, because I’d never done one before and was worried about having a bad skin reaction.

I wondered if I was making the right decision right up until the day of my shoot, but I have no regrets! If you wax on a regular basis, then go for it, but if not, shaving is completely fine.

You Won’t Regret the Investment

I was nervous about spending so much money on photos just for myself, but this is another concern that feels completely inconsequential now.

My boudoir experience was eye-opening in a lot of ways. It helped me embrace my femininity, celebrate a body I don’t often show off, and capture a piece of myself at a specific moment in time I wanted to remember.

I’m confident you won’t regret investing in yourself either. Reach out to book your consult with Beauty in Boudoir here and plan your first boudoir shoot today!
